It's the painting of love between Renaud and Armide.
Love is sublimated by unruly "putti" . They are painted evoking the rise of desire.
Bathed in a white light, the erotic tension of the painting comes from the center. It shows the shift of the Renaud' s head, the abandonment of his body between the the Armide's legs who exhibit her imminent nudity.
The impression of sensuality is accentuated by the angel who looks us back with complicity over his shoulder (It recalls the Parmigianino painting "Cupid carving his bow" (1533 / 1534). What about the symbolism of angels scabbardfish overlapping of Renaud, the angel perched atop the tree, donned the shoe, the knot tied at the calf and two hidden and lookouts soldiers!
Need to be restored.
